Culture and collaboration are key elements of helping to guard businesses, governments and society against cyber threats, says cyber security leader.
Cybersecurity teams must have a various mindset to supply the simplest means of protecting business, governments et al. from cyber attacks – which collaboration is the key to making sure different perspectives can close within the fight against cyber crime.
It’s this type of collaborative attitude which is required to assist combat challenges and reduce cyber risk to societies, says Pete Cooper, deputy director of cyber defense for the united Kingdom Cabinet Office and lead of the govt sector of the National Cyber Security Programmed.
The former RAF fast jet pilot turned cyber operations advisor founded the UK’s first multi-disciplinary cyber strategy competition and believes that better collaboration and variety is the key to tackling international cybersecurity challenges.
“We all have diverse perspectives of what our challenges are and that we all have our individual horizons and therefore the real value of collaboration comes through seeing the planet with those diverse perspectives,” Cooper said, speaking during his keynote session at Black Hat Europe 2020.
“Because by doing that you simply then start creating shared perspectives, you begin pushing out your joint horizons so you’ll see further and develop a way better joint understanding of everything”.
Mixing together the various perspectives has the potential to rework how resources are often used and what actions are often taken, he explained – and perhaps even find new ways of handling known and previously unknown scenarios.
“It creates a singular collaboration so you’ll identify those obstacles, opportunities and concepts you would not be ready to do previously – and that is what it really means to collaborate,” Cooper said.
“In collaborating across those diverse teams, the simplest solutions are those joint solutions and it takes that collaboration”.
Preventing and responding to cyber attacks and data breaches may be a key part of cybersecurity, it is from the sole a part of the work – and therefore the culture of the industry and knowledge security teams within organizations must reflect that.
“Incidents are just the tip of the iceberg which we have got to possess an excellent and engaged culture to ascertain under the surface and understand what the issues are, understand what the events are and understand what the ideas could be to ascertain them,” Cooper explained.
And while bringing together those different perspectives does take time and energy , as he noted during the session, collaboration and variety is effective for everything that cybersecurity is attempting to realize .
“Because if we do this , we then start sharing those shared perspectives and that we expand out our horizons,” Cooper said.
“The more we form those joint horizons by working together, the higher it’s for everyone as we attempt to tackle the key risks going forwards,” he added.
